It is unfortunate that land is divided politically. Into countries, states, districts etc. It is unfortunate, that, there are all these different languages in this world. And castes. And sub-castes.
Nevertheless.
My parents come from neighboring, but different states in India. And practice(d) different religions. Praise the Lord.
I do not write, or speak Malayalam, a language my father (and all of his family) did. I speak Konkani. Limited vocab. and grammatically incorrect. But I can communicate, fluently. The language of the Fernandes, my mom’s side of the family. Konkani has no alphabet. At least I don’t know of. But Rocky Miranda, in fact, mom’s cousin has been coming up with something since years, in collaboration with the University of Goa. I don’t have status updates.
I identify myself as a lad from the West coast of India. I have deep and etched connections with all of the Western states i.e. Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. I was born, and brought up in Bombay, the capital of Maharashtra, the city I call home, and after all my travels through the country, I proclaim it to be the best city in India. I am just as comfortable in cities, and villages, along the coastal regions of Goa, Karnataka, and, Kerala. The National Highway 17 extends from home, to, close to the place of my father’s birth i.e. from Maharashtra, to, Kerala – or more specifically, Panvel to Cochin, via Panjim and Mangalore.
I do not speak for the *people* of the West coast of India. At the end of the day, most of all of this is applicable to all of them, but, the culture has been corrupted, and identities lost. Like mine. Praise the Lord.
Hence, I speak only for myself.
Some of *the* most favorite things in the world, to me, are, the beach, coconut trees, Toddy (or Palm wine), Urak/Feni (an alcoholic beverage squeezed out of cashew nuts) and fish. I can to that beer, computers &software, black and white film, SLR cameras, the Internet, cricket and television channels that broadcast live cricket, air conditioning etc. But let us not get into all of that.
I am a lad from the West coast of India. My ancestors, on both sides of the family, lived their lives close to shore i.e. close to the Arabian Sea. Fishing and farming is the primary occupation of the people of the Konkan region; fish-curry and rice, the staple diet.
